MagSoc Choirs and Orchestras
The MagSoc Chorus welcomes people of all musical backgrounds, with no audition necessary; the only requirement is that you want to sing! We rehearse weekly in Queens' College Chapel during Michaelmas and Lent terms, usually working towards a single large performance at the end of each term. Recent performances have included Orff's Carmina Burana, Poulenc's Gloria, and Handel's Messiah.
If you want to borrow a copy of the music, we will request you bring a cheque for £15 (payable to "St Margaret's Society of Queens'") to serve as a deposit (cashed only if your score is not returned on time at the end of the term, and is otherwise destroyed or returned to you at your request).
We use a mailing list to communicate details about upcoming Chorus rehearsals and concerts. If you would like to receive these emails, please join the list here.
The Magsoc Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performs once a term alongside the Magsoc Chorus in a large Cambridge concert venue. Typically, concerts involve a choral work, a concerto, and an overture. Recent performances featured Poulenc's Organ Concerto, Dvořák's Requiem and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
MSO rehearses at the end of each term (usually in weeks 7 and 8). In four intense and enjoyable rehearsals you cover all the repertoire for the concert. The orchestra works on a invitation basis, sourcing players from across the university.

Other Musical Groups
Although not run by MagSoc, we enjoy a close working relationship with these other musical groups in Queens' College.
Queens' is home to a thriving Chapel Choir under the direction of Dr Ralph Allwood MBE and the two college Organ Scholars. The choir sings Choral Evensong on Wednesdays and Sundays, and Choral Compline on Friday evenings during the Cambridge term. They also sing concerts, recitals, and services at major Christian and college events throughout the year. The choir has recently toured Germany, Switzerland and Hong Kong, and has made critically acclaimed recordings with Guild Music and Orchid Classics.
Queens' Graduate Choir (Grad Choir for short) is a relaxed choir for graduate students and alumni of Queens' College (although it welcomes singers from across Cambridge). The choir performs at various college events throughout the year, including termly MCR concerts and the occasional service in Chapel.
